#71 - Mushrooms - 1988
When you are poor you go to great lengths to save money. For example my Junior year the only thing I ate (other than when I ate out) was Turkey pastrami on a bun. It was cheap and I needed money to hit the graduate or Mr. B's. My Senior year it was baked chicken and plain lettuce. But I'm off track here.
Jeff and I used to go to Wookstocks pizza and order pizzas, but to save money we'd bring our own mushrooms that we would microwave beforehand. We'd then stick them on top of the pizza and save the $0.80 or so that an extra topping cost. Well one night we had our Styrofoam cup of microwaved mushrooms in hand and headed to Woodstocks. We got there and it was closed, why? Who knows!
So we are in the middle of Davis with a cup full of microwaved Mushrooms. What else could we do? We started offering them to people as they walked by us. You've never gotten weirder looks than the ones you get from middle aged people that you offer mushrooms on the street corner from a Styrofoam cup. People'd walk by and in a hushed voice we'd go "Pssst, come here. Come on. Want a mushroom???"
Just one of those kooky moments that sticks out in my brain!
