Jeff Cadle Stories

As the Millenium changed I sent out to my friends a listing of my Top 100 memories of my first Millineum. Jeff played a prominent role in many of the memories. I've included several memories/stories about Jeff in this site for your amusement. Please feel free to email me any stories or memories you have of him and we'll add it to either the Stories or the Blogs page appropriately.

#53 - Do it for the picture - 1985

Published June 4, 2006 1:41 PM by Phil Parker

This is really two stories on the same subject, Jeff and I's hobby during our heavy skiing days of skiing off cliffs.

  1. Jeff and I discovered a nice cliff at Kirkwood ski resort near one of the chair lifts. We skied to the top of it to check it out. People on the lift started to yell at us "Do it, Do it!" finally Jeff and I had checked out the angle, speed, etc. the only problem was a small pine tree, about 5 feet tall at the bottom. As long as we didn't hit the pine tree no problem. Jeff went first, nice take off, and landing but his momentum took him tight into the pine tree and he wrapped his leg around it. He was OK got up and yelled at me, "It's not so bad, just don't hit the tree." So it was my turn, the weather was chilly, the people on the chair lift were yelling, it was GO TIME! So I did, I hit hard and lost control, my momentum of course took me right into the on little pine tree that Jeff had crashed into as well. We were both uninjured, but couldn't believe we had both hit the one little 5 foot tree at the base of the cliff.
  2. Jeff and I went skiing with Rob. He didn't do any of the cliffs but was a trooper on jumps etc. We stopped to take pictures all day long. Finally near the end of the day we talked him into skiing off a cliff (Rob's 1st mistake). He had to "Do it for the Picture" Well we scouted out a nice one, about 20 feet high with a flat landing area (Rob's 2nd mistake, you want an angled landing area so your momentum carries you down the mountain, you don't want to just hit an go blam!). We got Rob to hike up to the top and then the 4 corner offense took over. Rob was hesitant, very hesitant, extremely hesitant. It took us over 40 minutes to get him to finally ski off it (Rob's 3rd mistake). He finally did, I snapped the picture of him in midfall, he hit hard CRASH and fell in a heap. He wasn't too happy with the whole experience but hey he did it! So we get back to the car and I notice that the camera is still on picture #2, uh oh! Turns out I forgot to loop the film over the sprockets so that it would advance. Sorry Rob! Well at least we have our memories.
